GALLERI CHRISTINA WILSON
PRESS RELEASE
Kirstine Roepstorff, Rainbows
7 May – 27 June 2009
It is a great pleasure to be able to present Galleri Christina Wilson's third exhibition by Kirstine Roepstorff, this time in our new premises on Esplanaden.
The exhibition title, Rainbows, is a metaphor on simultaneous being and non-being. It is the position between these two kinds of presence that interests Kirstine Roepstorff. In the large gallery space, four major works are exhibited: North, South, West, East and Center. Each work represents a figure which, via balance and concentration, achieves a presence in the now, and thereby dissolves itself in its own background. The colours of the works represent different times of the day, while their titles give the works a direction in relation to the observer. The work Center is hidden behind a curtain which contains the colours from the other works.
In addition to the large collages, Roepstorff is also showing a number of smaller collages, Notes of Density. These works are built up around two polar opposite phenomena: peacefulness and restlessness. Stone in its various forms represents peace, silence and the dense mass, in contrast to aggression and restlessness, represented by cuttings from media magazines. Round about, the daily stream of news is portrayed in the form of small political pin-pricks: terrorism, soldiers, Muslim women dressed in burqas, and immigration. In relation to the large works, these smaller works function as a separate polar contrast to the perfect balance expressed in the large space.
In recent years, Kirstine Roepstorff has held exhibitions at prestigious institutions all over the world: the Arnolfini Gallery in Bristol, England in 2006, the Drawing Center in New York in 2007, the Saatchi Gallery in London in 2008, and U-TURN in Copenhagen. Roepstorff is currently giving a large solo exhibition at the MUSAC museum of contemporary art in Leon, Spain. This autumn, she will be holding a solo exhibition at Brandts in Odense, and in 2010 she will be exhibiting at the Basel Museum für Gegenwartskunst and Galerie im Taxispalais in Innsbruck.
